Ascension so far

Welcome Ascension so far Our services Weddings, baptisms and confirmations

The Church of the Ascension was built in 1880s when the area to the south of Clapham Common was being developed. The church has been through many changes during the intervening years. The Ascension in its present form is the product of a church graft which took place in 1993 when around 50 members of St Mark's Battersea Rise came to join a similar number of people who at that time made up the congregation at Ascension. Six years later the present vicar, Stephen Hance, was appointed.

At Ascension we are committed to meeting the challenges of the 21st Century whilst seeking to honour the traditions of the past, and the service of those who have sustained the church through the generations. This committment has meant that we have seen much change over recent years as we have passionately pursued the goal of reaching the people of our community with the love of God.

Each year we seek the Lord for his agenda for the coming year; what is it that is to be the focus of our life and mission together over the next 12 months? Over the last couple of years he has led us to move outwards beyond the walls of the church, that is, to our community, through teaching, worship, healing and authentic relationship. In 2007 this saw us seeking to bless every person in the parish with tangible acts of Jesus' love. Parishioners have discovered us on their doorsteps with flowers and light bulbs, commuters have been stopped in thier tracks with gifts of bottled water and strawberries, and many people came together for a celebration of our culture and differences at our International Party.

In 2008 we believe the Lord is calling us to go deeper with him: to seek to encounter him in a deeper way, in prayer, worship and healing and to commit ourselvs to building deeper relationships with those we are reaching out to. It promises to be an exciting adventure and one which we'd love you to join.
